A chilly autumn morning in South Africa and all that can warm me up,  is warm porridge. Usually I will cook my Woolworth Rolled Oats, but I have been experimenting with Quinoa
lately.

“Why not cook Quinoa for breakfast?”

I did some reading about the cooking temperature, cooking duration and different methods of cooking of Quinoa. This is my attempt at cooking a warm porridge from Quinoa grains.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup x Organic Quinoa
  • 1 Cup x Fat Free Milk [Use Almond or Soy milk if available]
  • 1 tspn x Vanilla Essence
  • 1 x Kiwi fruit
  • Cinnamon stick & spices
  • Raw Almond Butter [own preference]

Method:

Boiling milk & cinnamon sticks

1. Start by heating the milk in a pot on the stove. Add the vanilla essence + cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil.

2. Pour the Quinoa into the boiling milk. Stir for 2-3 minutes. Lower the heat, close the lid and leave to simmer for 10-15 minutes.

3. Stir occasionally until the Quinoa has absorbed most of the liquid and the grains has softened.

4. Once all the liquid is absorbed, dish in a bowl. Now cut fresh kiwi fruit, and sprinkle with cinnamon spice.

Note: If you prefer an extra bit of boost. Add 1 tbspn x Raw Almond Butter.

My first thoughts; it is was tasty! 😀 The combination of the warm cooked Quinoa with fresh kiwi fruit definitely made a warm bowl of goodness. Kiwi has more Vitamin C than Oranges and provides a tangy flavour to the plain grain. The down side of my Quinoa porridge; it is still not a “porridge.” When cooking the rolled oats, the flakes would soak up liquid and increase in size and volume. Whereas the Quinoa only soaks up a limited amount of liquid. The grains only softens, but does not increase in volume. When eating the cooked Quinoa isn’t as filling as a bowl of oats, but wins hands-down in the Nutritional Department.
