The inspiration of creativity and design is in the air with the upcoming Creative Week in Cape Town. Creative Week CT kicks off tomorrow, the 14th -to 22nd of September. It is only fitting that we discuss some art.

This post is from our recent travels in Italy. We planned a day-tour of the Vatican in Rome, St. Peter’s Church and St. Peter’s Square. This specific day, all my expectations was met! 🙂 I’m not going to enlighten you on all the magnificent historical sculptures and buildings we spotted on the day.

In the Eye of the Sphere

The master piece of the day was by far the iconic “finger reaching for God. The fresco painting known as The Creation of Adam by Michealangelo.

Standing in the Sistine Chapel, right underneath this complex painting.; took my breath away! A moment in time where a dream became a reality for me. [See the 360 view of the Sistina for yourself.]

The other art piece that caught my eye was the Sphere Within Sphere by Arnaldo Pomodoro. A strangely modern piece between the ruins of the old Vatican City.

Pomodoro created this controversial fiberglass crucifix that stands tall in the Courtyard of the Pinecone. It is clear by the “lock” mechanism inside the structure that the artist portrays his feelings about the complexity of our world.  In Pomodor’s own word; “The sculpture is intended as a metaphor for the coming of a new millennium, a promise for the rebirth of a less troubled and destructive world.” November 19, 1999.

The depth of meaning and the motion of the sphere is what grabbed me!

The World is a Sphere

Pomodoro did not create only one Sphere structure, but has a series of Sphere sculptures around the world. Have you spotted some of his work in Spain, France or Dublin perhaps? If you haven’t; here is a some of his work.
